Food Technology is simply the post harvest technology where the seasonal agricultural and horticultural produce is processed & preserved for long periods for safe storage and further usage.Using Food Technology, it is possible to supply the fortified and nutritious foods to the needy population of at very affordable cost.
A Food Technologists can get employment in various departments of an Organization mainly in Production Engineer, Maintenance, Quality Assurance, Entrepreneurship Development, Project Financing, Implementation and Appraisal, R&D, Industrial Sectors, Government Department, Educational Institutions, NGOs etc .
Food Process Engineering Lab, Food Safety and Microbial Testing Lab, Incubation Center and Departmental training Office.
Why Food Technology ? : It is estimated that nearly 25-35% of perishable food produced in the farm is wasted or rendered unfit for human consumption due to improper storage and preservation. Though our country has achieved near self-sufficiency in many food items and exporting certain food items as they are surplus, the above wastage is resulting in shortages in certain pockets. This wastage may account for a total of around Rs. 60,000 corers which is colossal. As the natural resources of land & water are limited resulting in very limited food supplies, it is of utmost importance to save and use all the food produced. Even a simple cup of tea requires sugar, milk, water and tea powder and all these come from different industries after processing.
Food Engineering & Technology is a branch of Science and Engineering which uses a set of methods and techniques to transform raw ingredients into food for the consumption of humans and animals. Technology of Food Processing leads to longer preservation of food, enhancement in its quality, taste, flavour and reduction in toxins in the food product The rising consumerism in the societies of developed and developing countries has contributed to the growth of food processing industries with techniques such as spray drying, juice concentrates, freeze drying, extrusion and the introduction of artificial sweeteners, colorants and preservatives.
